I've Seen Some Alarmist Stuff in my Time, But ...

…then I saw this piece in the American Thinker. Wow.
Farewell to Zion. Forever.
It’s funny how some people seem to think that Israel would be powerless in the face of a nuclear attack, as if Israel hasn’t been preparing for this possibility for years.
Israel has nuclear weapons of its own (it’s been the sole nuclear power in the Middle East for at least twenty years): (1), Jericho and Shavit missiles to carry them, the Jericho III having a long enough range to hit anywhere in Iran or the rest of the Middle East:
(2), and arguably pound-for-pound the finest air force on the planet, which is fully capable of long-range missions and very likely nuclear capable: (3), not to mention nuclear-capable submarines for second-strike capability: (4)
And for those that say that deterrence doesn’t work, I think there’s no doubt that Iraq under Saddam Hussein was a textbook rogue state, and deterrence worked on Iraq during the Gulf War. Anyone old enough to remember it (I was in college at the time) will remember the Scud attacks on Israel, and remember that the missiles were armed with conventional warheads, not chemical ones, even though Iraq undoubtedly had chemical weapons at the time, and chemical attacks would very likely have brought Israel into the war, which is what Hussein wanted. So, Saddam either suddenly decided to pay attention to the Geneva Protocol, or maybe he had a revelation that Israel really is the Promised Land, or the threat of a nuclear counter-strike from Israel caused him not to take that step.
Besides, if a nuclear missile was launched at Israel, would it reach its target, or would it be shot down by Israel’s fully operational air defense and anti-ballistic missile system?

The leaders of Iran have been described as crazy, and maybe they are, or maybe they could be in the future. But you’d have be to outright bonkers to sign your own death warrant in order to launch a strike which probably won’t even hit its target.
